Community cricket clubs are locally based, volunteer-driven sports organization that offers cricket opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels. This allows young players to continue playing cricket as they age out of the junior cricket space.
Key Features of a Community Cricket Club
Open to Everyone: They welcome beginners, casual players, and experienced competitors alike, focusing on fun, participation, and inclusivity rather than elite pathways.
Social and Local Hub: They act as gathering places for neighborhoods, bringing together players, families, coaches, and volunteers to build local connections and a shared sense of community.
Volunteer-Run: Day-to-day operations—including coaching, umpiring, running canteens, and committee management—are handled by local volunteers with support from state bodies like WA Cricket.
Local Leagues: Unlike elite state or district premier pathways, community clubs typically compete in regional or suburban associations (such as the WA Suburban Turf Cricket Association or North Suburban Community Cricket Association).
Senior Community Cricket Clubs in our area include:
Scarborough Sharks Cricket Club plays in a Perth metro based cricket competition on Saturday afternoons from October to March each year. Home base is at Bennet Park, Doubleview.
Anyone can join from 14yrs to 100yrs. They cater for all cricketing abilities. Just good, fun cricket. Junior payers can join with the senior club as well if they want more cricket in a weekend.
A district cricket pathway is the structured development system that moves young and aspiring cricketers from local grass-roots clubs up to elite state and national representation
How the Pathway Works
Grass-Roots & Community Clubs: Players start in local junior clubs, school teams, or lower-tier community associations where they learn the basic skills and rules of the game.
Representative & Age-Group Cricket: Juniors are selected for district, regional, or zone-based representative teams (such as U13, U15, and U17 age-group squads) to play in carnivals and inter-association tournaments.
Premier / District Cricket: Players transition into senior or junior Premier Cricket / District Cricket clubs (governed by state bodies like WA Cricket), playing high-grade club cricket against top local talent.
State Academies & Emerging Talent: Standout performers enter state high-performance academy squads, Futures leagues, or State Underage teams.
Elite & National Level: The final tier leads to first-class domestic cricket (e.g., Sheffield Shield, Women's National Cricket League) and national representation for Australia.
Trials are generally held in February and March, with Expressions of Interest (EOI) opening around January. Details will be on the clubs websites.
